Previously, rice farmers in Ukraine were engaged in Crimean farmers, covering the country's market demand by 70%. To date, this culture continues to be cultivated in the Kherson and Odessa regions, but the volume of local product in the Ukrainian market has already decreased to 30%.
To grow rice, you need a lot of heat and water. With heat in the southern regions of the country, everything is fine, but water is now expensive and rice growers do not always have the opportunity to fill crops. But scientific thought does not stand still and in 2017.
The Institute of Rice of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Skadovsk) proposed an alternative scheme for growing this crop using drip irrigation. It does not imply flooding of areas with crops, but it is necessary to completely redo the system for drip irrigation.
The new method of cultivation gives the same high yields as with conventional cultivation, while saving water and expanding the range of possible rice growing.
If the state supports rice farmers, then Ukraine will not only be able to abandon imports, but will also discover rice exports.
It is possible that soon in the Ukrainian markets will be sold colored rice, enriched with pigment, which makes it more useful for humans. The NAAS Rice Institute is already working on this. And also special rice for sushi Nishiki, which used to be purchased in the USA and Thailand, can be successfully grown in Ukraine.
