Harvesting strawberries in the southern regions of the country may end ahead of time due to prolonged rains and hail. The flooding of berry plantations has led farmers of Kherson and Mykolayiv regions for three days in a row not to harvest.
As a result, the supply of berries in the markets of the South of the country has declined significantly, and producers believe that the resumption of supplies remains in question, even after the water comes off.
The region is going through a difficult time, as on some plantations the berries received significant damage by hail, and secondly, and due to excess moisture, the quality of the berries deteriorated.
Harvesting strawberries also stopped in some central regions of Ukraine, which also suffered losses from the vagaries of the weather. At the same time, the prices of berries that have already arrived on the roars went up.
But even the price increase does not please farmers, since the wet berry is not stored and does not tolerate transportation. It can no longer be sold in other regions and needs to be sold on the spot as soon as possible. And processors and traders do not risk purchasing such a product.
Farmers who have contracted with processing plants or supermarkets are especially worried. If the terms of the contracts are not fulfilled, they will face heavy fines.
At the same time, processors cannot find large quantities of marketable berries, and the prices for it are already higher than they were last year, says Tatyana Getman, head of the Analytics department of the Shuvar ORSP.
