Syktyvkar agronomists declare war on the long-standing enemy of farmers - the hogweed of Sosnovsky.
This plant was once brought to Russia from the Caucasus Mountains for the purpose of processing for feed for cows. However, the product turned out to be unusually toxic and dangerous - not only for cows, but also for humans. A big problem was the high speed of distribution of hogweed, as well as the scale of the territories that it “captured” throughout the entire post-Soviet space.
For many years, researchers have resolved the issue of combating harmful cow parsnip, which is capable of leaving burns of varying degrees on the human body and sometimes leads to death.
“More recently, we came to the conclusion that you can fight with cow parsnip with two“ helpers ”- a low temperature and a shovel,” say scientists from the Syktyvkar Institute of Biology. - This “panacea” is most effective in the northern regions. The good news is that the method of dealing with cow parsnip that we offer is environmentally friendly and does not require large expenditures. ”
During the experiment, the researchers were able to achieve complete extinction of the hogweed at the control site at the Institute's laboratory. Scientists were able to establish that the buds of a garden pest die at a temperature below 15 degrees Celsius:
“Yes, in winter the snow protects the roots of the plant from damaging low temperatures, but with the help of a shovel you can clear the ground and allow the frost to thoroughly“ process ”the root system of Sosnowski hogweed. And no herbicides or other special chemicals are required. This is especially true when it comes to the extermination of hogweed near kindergartens, hospitals and reservoirs. "
To date, experiments are ongoing. According to scientists, the final results will be announced in mid-2019.
