Two mink farms from Ukraine Pelsky and Viking successfully passed the entire certification procedure according to the requirements of WelFur, an international animal welfare assessment program.
Location of enterprises - Kiev region. Both Viking and Pelsky are members of the Association of Animal Farmers of Ukraine, uniting 9 Ukrainian mink farms. The remaining farms from the association now also pass international certification.
By obtaining the WelFur certificate, domestic fur farms have certified compliance with stringent animal handling requirements.
This also means that both companies are participating in self-regulation, to which the European Commission has full confidence, said the president of the Association of Animal Farmers of Ukraine Oleksandr Dyk.
WelFur is a program that imposes more stringent animal welfare requirements than EU laws. In January 2019, it achieved recognition by the European Commission as a self-regulatory tool. WelFur is the world's leading animal welfare assessment program provided by an independent third party, Baltic Control.
The certification process includes the study of the functioning of the farm on 12 parameters. They include: animal health, their behavior, housing system, nutrition, positive and negative emotions, the relationship between animals and people, as well as ways to manage a fur farm.
