In the last days of March, greenhouses in Ukraine began picking tomatoes, opening the season. The remaining producers of domestic tomatoes plan to start harvesting an early crop in mid-April.
This season is characterized by high prices for the first batch of Ukrainian tomatoes. Since the beginning of this week, domestic manufacturers have been selling their products for at least 60 UAH / kg ($ 2.20 / kg), which is 20% more expensive than in the same period in 2018.
In the last days of March last year, the cost of tomatoes from greenhouses in Ukraine was at a level of 50 UAH / kg ($ 1.83 / kg).Leading market operators express confidence in the short-term maintenance of current prices for tomatoes. Competition with imported products, which already costs half as much now, will help reduce their cost.
The price of imported tomatoes produced in Turkey began to decline. Today, a Turkish product can be found for sale at 38-43 UAH / kg ($ 1.39 - 1.58 / kg), which is 9% cheaper than at the end of last working week. Market operators explain the downward trend in prices for foreign tomatoes by low demand from the population. Buyers often complain about the low quality of tomatoes from Turkey.
